What Do I Get in Return?
As a general rule of thumb, people aren’t very motivated to do things without a reciprocal response for them to receive back. We can find one in the Bible when it comes to witnessing:
Philemon 1:6 (NIV)
I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ.
This verse tells us that we receive something in return when we share our faith with others. This should not be the motivating factor to share our faith, however; our hearts need to be about people. As with everything God does, it is to help people. So, when we are out witnessing, our primary goal is to help people by bringing them together with the Lord even when we give we are promised blessings back:
Luke 6:38 (NLT)
“Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”
Our motivation to give should be to help people—not so we can have more. When you are a blessing to people, then you, in turn, will be blessed.
