Confidence In the Holy Spirit—In You
Recognizing that God will speak through us provides and instills confidence in us to reach out to others.
Mark 13:10-11 (NLT)
For the Good News must first be preached to all nations. But when you are arrested and stand trial, don’t worry in advance about what to say. Just say what God tells you at that time, for it is not you who will be speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
When the Can I Get A Witness program first started back in 1988, I asked my pastor how to reach out to the neighborhood around our church. His response was, “I don’t know Scott, but I trust the Holy Spirit in you.” His response was very scary to me, but because of his trust in the Holy Spirit, I also started trusting the Holy Spirit in me. Over twenty-five years later, I am convinced that trusting the Holy Spirit in us is the key to reaching any neighborhood.
When preaching the Good News to all nations, we can rely on Christ’s promise to us:
Matthew 10:20 (NLT)
For it is not you who will be speaking–it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
For this reason alone, we do no use memorized scripts or predetermined lists the Can I Get A Witness program. We trust the Holy Spirit in us to have the correct things to say and when to say them.
The correct things to say varies from one person to another. Your goal is to have a conversation with them—not just talk to them. You need to listen—really listen—and to share. As you listen to them, you will begin to gain an insight on what God wants you to say to them by the Holy Spirit. Then, just start speaking out what you believe is the right thing to say.
God will speak through you. He wants that person to be saved, encouraged, and blessed more than you do. He knows the thoughts and intentions of their heart, and you probably don’t. Because He knows them, He wants to help them, and, more importantly, He knows how to help them. Allow God to be God when you encounter others through the Can I Get A Witness program.
